Probiotics - What are they?

Probiotics are most often known for their positive effects on your gut and digestion system. They are often found in supplements and in foods like yoghurts. However, the application on the skin is also beneficial in many ways. The skin is the bodies largest organ and protects us from outside bacteria, pollutants and more. Taking care of it is therefore immensely important for overall health.

"[...] the barrier function and the innate immune system of the skin indicate that the skin's microbiota have a beneficial role, much like that of the gut microflora.” - Jean Krutmann

The skin is naturally full of both good and bad bacteria. The bad ones can cause irritations and harm the skin, and might even enter our bodies to cause internal infections. Antibiotics are widely used to treat such infections, but the abundant use of the medicine has caused bacteria to develop a resistance to it. Some studies discuss the potential of probiotics to prevent the need for antibiotics by reducing the number of bacterial infections in the first place.

“Topical applications of probiotic bacteria have a direct effect at the site of application by enhancing the skin natural defence barriers.” - F. H. Al-Ghazzewi

Through probiotics you can enhance the number of positive micro-organisms (bacteria) on the skin, creating an environment where positive bacteria dominate, acting as a barrier against negative bacteria for the skin.

"Probiotic bacteriotherapy can have great potential in preventing and treating the skin diseases including eczema, atopic dermatitis, acne, and allergic inflammation or in skin hypersensitivity, UV-induced skin damage, wound protection, and as a cosmetic product.” - M.R. Roudsari

Our wellness soaps contain two strains of probiotic bacteria that help strengthen the skin's natural defence against unwanted bacteria. The lactic micro-organisms in the probiotic serum also make the soaps more gentle to the skin. They are developed together with our partner MGEcoDuties that specializes in probiotic and eco-friendly products. We will write more about all our amazing partners later!
