Did you know that store-bought mouthwash can kill the natural oral bacteria in the mouth causing worse bad breath? We need friendly bacteria in our mouths as it is an important part of our immune system and even help fend off unwanted bacteria such as those that cause bad breath.
What is Coconut Oil pulling?
Oil pulling is a method that freshens your breath without harming the natural microbiome in your mouth. This ancient Ayurvedic practice has become popular in recent years. It is claimed to not only freshen the breath but also improve gum health and even help maintain white teeth. Our DIY mouthwash recipe is based on oil pulling with coconut oil, and herbs known for their benefits to oral health.
Ingredients:
1 Cup Coconut Oil
3-4 Clove Buds
1 Cinnamon Stick
(Optional) 3 Drops of Peppermint Oil or Spearmint Oil (food grade only)
Instructions:
Add the clove and cinnamon sticks to the coconut oil
Optionally, add peppermint or spearmint oil for a refreshing taste (use max 3 drops)
Warm up the mixture gently in a water bath for about 10 minutes (not a boiling water bath - you want to keep the antimicrobial activity and nutrients in the coconut oil alive)
Let the mixture steep until use
Pour the mouthwash into a clean bottle or jar
How to Use the Mouthwash:
Take a tablespoon of the mouthwash 1-2 times a day.
Swish the mixture around in your mouth for 1 minute or more.
Spit it out. Do not rinse your mouth with water afterwards.
Avoid eating or drinking anything other than water for a little while afterwards.
